An 18th century 30hr longcase clock, brass dial signed Ric. Felton Bridgnorth

Record number:
E86

Richard Felton is recorded as working during the first half of the 18th century. He was apprenticed to Thomas Vernon of Ludlow in 1711, for seven years - in 1718 he was admitted as a freeman of the Guild of Hammermen 'to ye trade of a Goldsmith, Clock and Watchmaker'. In 1732, according to the Parish Records, he married Mary Griffiths of Ludlow. Little is known of his working life, but there is a record of a George Felton working as a clockmaker in Bridgnorth in the second half of the 18th century, who was Richard and Mary's son. The clock has a 30hr movement, striking the hours, with a single hand, probably dating from around 1740. It is in a pine case, which may have originally been lacquered.
