Ecclesiastical mat, possibly 1890's - 1900, Trinity - green. Mostly couching. Laidwork is couched with a single thread going the other way. The thin lines near the cord are stem stitch. The flowers are worked in long and short stitch and hyphenate long and short stitch. Thread: The floss silk (flowers) are unspun. The twisted cord is salisbury cord (probably unspun). The gold thread is called passing (probably jap) and is always used double and is sewn down with silk (Maltese silk, very heavily twisted). The little circles are probably padded before being worked (purple one). Date: Difficult, probably 1900, could be 10 years either side - background fabric made for years. Workmanship: Not amateur - unlikely commercial - probably nuns.
