photograph - sepia in plastic wallet. Bridgnorth Borough Police Force c.1886. (2 years before they came under the County Councils). Names hand written on bottom - left to right p.c. L. Tomkins, chief constable John Cole, p.c. W. Purchase , sgt. Davies and p.c. Partridge. Chief constable Cole lived at the police house behind Whitburn Street until 1887. It had 2 cells at the rear each with a studded oak door, padlock and chain. The adjoining goal house, approached from Norhgate was demolished in 1923. Notes: Uniform similar to County Constabulary, Rifle green frockcoats, ornamented with gilt buttons bearing corporation coat of arms. In 1870 changed top hats for cloth helmets.
